In the summer of 2010, I made my first solo trip. The plan was to travel from Liverpool up north and to reach Edinburgh after a month or so. Instead, I spent around three days in Liverpool, two days in Manchester and I traveled straight to Edinburgh to visit my friends. Liverpool was fun, but Manchester was lonely and I decided to just make my way to my favourite city.
In this blog post I’ll describe Liverpool. After 2010, I actually visited Liverpool a couple of times. It’s one of my favourite cities in England.
It was nice to travel by myself because I could make my own itinerary and I’m quite happy with what I visited.
Beatles
When you write a blog about Liverpool, you have to start with the Beatles. They are from Liverpool, so there are quite some sights to visit for a fan. I am not a fan, but I still visited the main sights.
They do not require any further introduction I think.
Albert Dock
Another famous sight in Liverpool is Albert Dock, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. There used to be a weather man who was jumping around the world map laid out on the water to inform people about the weather. Apparently, he fell into the water once. I didn’t find this video on YouTube, but that must’ve been hilarious.
Albert Dock is home to a few nice restaurants and bars, the Merseyside Maritime Museum, The Beatles Story and the Tate Liverpool. I actually only visited a bar and the Maritime Museum which was really nice.
Royal Liver Building
Close to the dock you can find the Royal Liver Building. This is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city of Liverpool and is home to two fabled Liver Birds that watch over the city and the sea. Legend has it that were these two birds to fly away, then the city would cease to exist.
St. Luke’s Church
At the end of one of the many shopping streets (Renshaw Street), you’ll find a very pretty abandoned church called St. Luke’s. My hostel was only a few metres away from this church so I passed it by every day.
Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral
Since I mentioned a church above, let’s continue with another church in Liverpool. The strangest church I have ever seen. Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King is the real name of the cathedral and building started in 1962. I really don’t know what to make of this. If all modern churches will look like this I think we should go back to medieval construction methods, because to say it’s ugly is an understatement. If you would’ve told me that this is a Scientology church it would’ve explained a lot, but it’s a Roman Catholic church. Please take special note of the blue light inside…
World Museum Liverpool
I also visited the World Museum in Liverpool which contains some usual museum stuff. The surrounding area of the museum looks very pretty.
Building with Rotating Wall
When I asked the people in the hostel what else I could see in Liverpool, they told me to go to a building which has a rotating wall. Yes, you heard this correctly, all day long part of this building is spinning around. It’s pretty cool.
Liverpool ONE
The best place for shopping in Liverpool is Liverpool ONE. It has only been opened since 2008, so when I visited it was reasonably new. Close to Liverpool ONE you can see the Radio City tower.
Conclusion
I love Liverpool! I haven’t visited many places in England, but so far Liverpool tops the list and is my favourite. Every sight is easy to travel because it’s all close together and shopping is fantastic. On several other occasions I experienced the nightlife which is definitely great as well.
