In 2008 I had booked a three day Uluru tour. On the third and final day there was a stop in Kings Canyon. I have decided to dedicate a separate post to Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) because this was by far my favourite part of the whole tour.
We would take the 4 hour hike through the Canyon. The first obstacle was Heartbreak Hill (named so because of the steepness of this climb). In the post about Kata Tjuta I mentioned there was a steep climb there as well, Hearbreak Hill is nothing compared to that one.
The views at the top of the hill over the gorge are beautiful and the whole landscape around and below Kings Canyon is fantastic. It’s really worth taking this hike and it wasn’t very challenging. The landscape will take your mind off the difficulties of the hike anyways.
This is a famous crack because it featured in the movie “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” (1994). I have not had the honor to watch the movie but I had the privilege to walk through the crack.
Garden of Eden in the middle of the canyon.
Kings Canyon wrapped up a great three day tour through the Outback. Of course I wish I had more time to explore more areas, but I was only on a short trip in Australia. I could recommend this tour as well as the tour from Cairns to Cape Tribulation. Whenever you don’t have much time to explore an area, a tour is the best way to get to know as much as possible as fast as possible. From Alice Springs I would fly on to Melbourne to spend to short days there. The next post is dedicated to Melbourne.
