Havana’s Best Kept Secret – Fusterlandia

I’ll start out by saying that I think Fusterlandia is Havana’s best kept secret. I’m not making this remark in vain. I had read a lot of posts about Cuba before going on this trip and I had seriously never heard of this place. So either I missed something, or it truly is Havana’s best kept secret.

If you think Havana can’t be any more colourful than its gorgeous old-timers, think again!

Havana

The whole city is colourful, but it is absolutely nothing like Fusterlandia in Jaimanitas.

So what is Fusterlandia? This Disney-esque name comes from Cuban artist José Fuster. Somewhere in Havana’s new town Fuster has transformed his home and its neighbourhood into a masterpiece of intricate tilework and kaleidoscopic colours.

Fusterlandia

I have never seen Gaudí’s work in real life, so nothing could prepare me for this extravaganza.

Fusterlandia

I think this is a clear-cut case of: you really have to see it to experience it. It is impossible to capture the madness by photos alone.

Fusterlandia

The artist’s whole house is covered with art from top-to-bottom. Colours stream at you from all sides, there are water fountains, statues and madness all over. Best of all, the art might be buys the crowd is definitely not.

How to get there?

A taxi is the most obvious way to go. I don’t know if you want to try out the public bus system, but that’s probably an option as well. Entrance to the house is free.

Don’t forget to explore the neighbourhood as well, because José’s art is splattered all around.

Conclusion

My next post will be a two-day itinerary for Havana. I simply could not wait to tell you about Fusterlandia though. I thought Berlin’s street art was special, this is street art on a whole other level.

Fusterlandia

If you go to Havana, try to make your way to Fusterlandia. It will obviously be out of the way for you as it isn’t anywhere near the city centre, but it’s worth the trek!
