One of my main reasons to visit Cuba was to see the classic cars. Chevrolets, Fords, Cadillacs, they all make my heart beat faster… I couldn’t think of a more suitable start for my Cuba posts than to relive the experience of the old time tour through Havana through photos.
Driving Classic Cars along the Malecón
As I mentioned in the introduction, old timers are by far my favourite cars and I can’t believe there’s a country that still has so many of them. The people that own them do so with a lot of love & care. These cars are a part of their livelihood and you can see that everywhere. The cars might be falling apart, but you won’t see them looking like it. You’ll find them shining and blinking on street corners and in parking lots all around the city. These cars are really supposed to be seen and experienced.
It’s easy to arrange a tour. Simply approach a person standing next to their car waiting for customers and negotiate a price. I didn’t have to arrange a ride as I visited the country with Djoser, a Dutch group travel organisation, who arranged everything for us. I’ll tell you more about the organisation and my experiences in future posts.
This post will only contain a lot of photos of classic cars (& my happy face).
This tour is a great way to see more of the city. Most of the drivers won’t speak English, so don’t expect a tour but just enjoy the scenery as it passes you by.
We took the cars into a park to take photos where we sat behind the wheel. I guess every tour will be different though and some won’t make this stop.
The highlight was driving along the Malecón, the waterfront, with the wind in our hair and the sun on our faces.
Enjoyed the tour and the classic cars! I’ve always wanted to visit Cuba. Thanks for sharing.
