As I described in my previous post, I visited Gothenburg mainly to see my friends and celebrate Midsummer with them. The day before I left to go back to Edinburgh, I managed to do some sightseeing. I can’t really call it sightseeing because me and my friends just wandered around the city from terrace to terrace and bar to bar and that’s how I managed to get an impression of the city.
Skansen Kronan
From my limited experience, the best place to get a good view over the city is Skansen Kronan. This is a fortress which was built in the 17th century, but all you can really see of the fortress are the cannons. As you can see in the pictures below, the viewpoint isn’t particularly high but it offers nice views over the neighbourhood.
Gothenburg Harbour
The city also has a quaint harbour with, at least in my mind, typically Swedish looking buildings.
Wanderings around the City
Apart from that I would say that the main draw of Gotheburg is just to go (in spring or summer when the weather is good) and enjoy the many terraces the city has to offer. I like cities that offer a lot of outdoor seating, and Gothenburgh does just that. There’s also a nice park where you can sit on the grass by the water.
They have Dutch looking bins; it’s not just the Orange it’s also the fact there is a lion on there.
There is a hotel with a swimming pool on top from which you can look down to the street. I didn’t go in, but it’s on my to-do list for next time. And I’d like a friend of mine to take a picture from below.
And there are some random pretties around the town.
Conclusion
I really enjoyed my stay in Gothenburg. Not only the Midsummer festivities but also just the atmosphere of the city. There are so many outdoor terraces that make it feel welcoming. As I stated before, and I will probably repeat again and again, I prefer the second biggest city in most countries. That’s also the case for Gothenburg. I did really enjoy Stockholm but I didn’t feel the atmosphere like I did here (maybe I visited Stockholm in the wrong season – Winter).
In the future (in my 2015 posts), I will be more mindful of the where I ate and where I had drinks, because often they are the best part of a city visit. Now that I’m writing posts about the past, I don’t have this information, but this is something you can expect as a future enhancement.
