When I visited Edinburgh for the third time in July 2010, I made a few day trips, which I will tell you more about in this post. All these sights are easy to visit by car.
Rosslyn Chapel
Rosslyn Chapel is in Roslin, Midlothian. The chapel has featured in theories concerning a connection of Freemasonry, the Knights Templar, and the Holy Grail. It was prominently featured in the 2003 bestseller The Da Vinci Code. This was actually the reason I wanted to visit it.
As luck would have it, they were performing rebuilding works on the chapel. Therefore, I did not get a good impression. I would love to visit it again.
Glenkinchie Distillery
There are six famous whisky distilleries in the Lowlands. I visited Glenkinchie which has a cute little museum and at the end of the tour you get to test their whiskies. I’m not a fan of whisky so this part of the tour was not really for me.
The look of someone who doesn’t like what she’s drinking.
Linlithgow
Linlithgow is a short bus ride away from Edinburgh. The first time I visited was in July 2010, since then I have made a couple of visits because I had some friends living there.
Linlitgow is most famous for the remains of its palace next to the lake. The most notable part is the crown spire on top of the building which is made out of steel. It look surreal and doesn’t suit the building at all.
There is not much left of the building, but it’s nice to look at.
Four Marys is a very cute local pub with some historical significance as I was told by the people who took me there. The Marys are the four ladies-in-waiting of Mary, Queen of Scots, who was born over the road in Linlithgow Palace. Back then, there was no pub here, but the building The Four Marys occupies was already standing as a family home.
