Here it is, guys! I’ve reached the final post about my ten-day holiday in the Netherlands Antilles. As usual, I’ll wrap things up with a foodie post.
Let’s start with a spoiler, namely the fact that the food in Curaçao is in no way less delicious than in Bonaire. Better yet, due to the abundance of restaurants, Curaçao does slightly better in the culinary arena.
Hotel – BijBlauw
We had a lot of meals at our hotel, so I feel it’s an appropriate time to introduce the place where we stayed during our time in Curaçao. BijBlauw is located in Pietermaai, which in my opinion is the perfect base for a stay in Willemstad. It’s close enough to Punda (the historical part of town) (10 mins on foot), yet the area itself is home to more than enough restaurants and bars to satiate most people’s needs.
There were two things about the room which bothered us slightly. One, we didn’t have a balcony or a window which could open enough to hang clothes and towels to dry. Two, the lay out of the room wasn’t ideal (for example we didn’t have a good long mirror and the closet was in a corner without a light) These are all first world problems, but when you you pay a bit more these are the expectations.
Enough negativity, both the staff of the hotel and the restaurant itself were great! Not to mention the gorgeous sea view from the restaurant. OK, we didn’t have a pool nor access to a beach due to the wild sea on that side, but we knew that when we booked the property.
The outside area is a perfect spot for beautiful sunsets.
We didn’t book breakfast together with our room, but somehow we ended up having breakfast every day anyways. It was delicious!
We only had dinner once, after the Klein Curaçao debacle.
The below list is in no way exhaustive in terms of wining & dining on Curaçao, but they should all be considered when you’re planning a trip there.
Lunch
Bistro Pietermaai
We found Bistro Pietermaai on our way home one day. The setting is inside an old renovated town house, so that’s what captured our attention. The food is simple, yet tasty. I ordered the beef quesadilla and it didn’t disappoint.
St. Tropez
St. Tropez has a pool, which anyone can access for a small fee. It was right next to our hotel which didn’t have a pool. Enough said, right? Whenever we had a free minute we walked over to relax at the pool and one day we had lunch there as well. I had a simple ham & cheese panini.
Dinner
Mundo Bizarro
In terms of dinner, I wonder if you can make a wrong choice in Curaçao. At least all places we visited had delicious food. One restaurant with great food and a beautiful design, and quirky style was the first place we visited on the island: Mundo Bizarro. It’s located in Pietermaai; I can’t judge whether the interior of the place looked good because we fell in love with the seating in the alleyway straightaway that we spent the evening there. I can definitely recommend this restaurant and the ossehaas steak!
Kome
Kome is not comparable to Mundo Bizarro in terms of style, it’s a bit more fancy, when it comes to food though they’re quite the same. There’s an outside seating area and two levels on the inside. It’s imperative you book as quickly as possible, because we booked a table on the same day and we had difficulty finding an appropriate timeslot. This night we went all out with a main (pasta shrimp & ham), and a scrumptious chocolate tart. You know I mean business when I even order a dessert wine, it’s my favourite but it’s a luxury I don’t enjoy every day.
Gouveneur
Looking at this list, I realize Gouveneur was the only restaurant we visited outside of Pietermaai in Otrabanda. A friend of my friend advised us to go here and to book a table at the courtyard. I’m passing on this knowledge and experience to you now. I ordered my much-loved chicken saté. I know I can get it in almost any restaurant in the Netherlands, but I went almost a week without it and I missed it. For all the non-Dutchies, it’s well-worth a try!
Ginger
One night we suddenly felt like having Indian food. Consequently we found a cute Asian restaurant in Pietermaai, which served what we desired. Ginger has cute outdoor seating and the atmostphere is nice and relaxed. I ordered Palak Paneer, which I missed since my trip to Goa a few years ago.
Drinks
Miles
Believe me, I know that most people come to Curaçao to party and to drink. We always went to bed early every day because we stuffed our schedule so full of activities that partying and drinking didn’t even come to mind. However, we walked by a cute jazzy looking bar where we decided we could at least enjoy one nice alcoholic beverage. This bar is in Pietermaai as well and is called Miles.
Conclusion
I think this post is making it sufficiently clear that eating out is something to look forward to on Curaçao. It doesn’t happen to me often that I only have dinner at delicious restaurants during a trip. Most credit is due to my friend who found out about all these gems by talking to the people around us and to her friends who have visited the island before. I realize most restaurants I mentioned are located in Pietermaai, maybe we can conclude that it’s the best area for wining and dining! Do you know of any other great Curaçao restaurants worth checking out on a next visit?
This concludes my series about the Netherlands Antilles! My next few posts will be about a few hikes I’ve done in the Netherlands, so stay tuned!
