After visiting a few sights along the Garden Route, I reached the final destination for the day, namely Cape Agulhas.
I mentioned in my blog about Knysna that there are quite a few areas in South Africa where ships faced issues. Cape of Good Hope and Knysna’s Heads were the ones I mentioned before and now I can add Cape Agulhas on that list as well.
Lighthouse
The sea off Cape Agulhas faces very rough winter storms and waves can reach up to 30m high. These conditions can sink even larger ships. One of the reasons for this phenomenon is because the colder Atlantic Ocean current meets the warmer Indian Ocean current in this spot. In order to alert the sailors, a lighthouse was built which functions as a cute museum and delicious restaurant now.
Southernmost Tip of Africa
From the lighthouse it’s a very short drive to the main sight, the southern-most tip of Africa. Don’t worry, I’m not going to bore you with the exact coordinates.
If someone would make you decide between this and Cape of Good Hope; you’d be better of at Cape of Good Hope in terms of sightseeing (the flora and fauna of that region is much more impressive and the views are spectacular) but you’d be better of at Cape Agulhas in terms of name dropping (since visiting the southernmost tip in Africa gives you even more bragging rights about your holidays in South Africa).
While driving around Cape Agulhas, I managed to take another perfect photo of the road disappearing and reappearing like an attraction in a theme park.
Pre-Book Accommodation
A word of advice, when you go to the area it’s best to book a hotel in advance. Prices are quite steep, even outside of high season and I ended up with a whole one-bedroom apartment which easily exceeded a two-day budget. It seems that a lot of families chose to stay in the area, so hotels are catered for them; therefore the bigger apartments and the higher prices. Of course, you didn’t hear me complaining about the extra space, because after almost three weeks on the road it was nice to have a huge living room and kitchen to call your own.
It’s also worth checking the surrounding area. There’s a cute beach close to Cape Agulhas with nice restaurants which makes it a nice place for a little stroll.
Conclusion
Cape Agulhas makes for a nice day trip. In retrospect, I would not have spent the night here again because there’s not that much to do and accommodation is more expensive than in other cities in the region. You can’t see anything special about the southernmost tip of Africa apart from a sign stating that that’s where it is. As I said before, it give you nice bragging rights so when you’re in the region I would say there’s no reason to skip it.
