My mother and I chose Bergamo as our final destination in Northern Italy in 2009. And I’m very happy about that because Bergamo is one of those hidden gems in Italy that not many people visit or speak about.
The fun part is taking the funicolare (cable railway) from Città Bassa to Città Alta. We did not explore Città Bassa at all so I do not have an opinion about that part of town. Città Alta is truly gorgeous though (and I didn’t even experience it in the best weather conditions. Rain…)
Bergamo Città Alta is home to cute winding alleyways and shops.
Piazza Vecchia
I can’t stop dreaming about how amazing this piazza would have been if the sun would have been out and there would have been tables outside. Piazza Vecchia is also home to the cutest statues I have ever seen (even cuter than the Chinese Lion with the cub under her paw).
The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore & Cappella Colleoni
I love how these churches have been built into the older looking building. This church is located on Piazza Duomo right next to Piazza Vecchia.
Bergamo’s Baptistery
The Rocca
The below image is of a gate in the Rocca (a walled stronghold). At the time I was studying Gothic literature and this image brought the imagery of the books in my mind.
Since this is the last post about my trip to Northern Italy for four days with my mother, I would like to share a little secret with you all. My favourite word in the Italian language is Carabinieri. I love pronouncing this word over and over again, it has such a nice rhythm and flow to it. Just try it, I’m sure you’ll like pronouncing it too!
