Belgrade – Three Walking Tours to Get To Know the City

Walking tours are my favourite way to explore a city. A walking tour made me fall in love with Sofia’s history. It also tipped the scale for Zutphen. If I don’t do a walking tour to get to know a city a bit; I always find I love the city a little bit less (yes, Ohrid I’m talking about you). Belgrade has so much history I didn’t know about before, so I was looking forward to learning more about the city by taking part in a few walking tours.

Free Downtown Walking Tour

I believe that the best way to start out is by going on a “Free tour”. They will usually give you a generic idea of the city and its most famous sights. I picked the Free Downtown Walking tour which is offered by Belgrade Walking Tour.

Our tour guide was an enigmatic person and a great storyteller. The main upside to the tour were the different props our guide brought along. We tried alcoholic beverages, held funny drinking glasses and marvelled at Yugoslavian bank notes. The stops on this tour are the Republic Square, the National theater, the Bohemian Quarter (Skadarlija),  and the oldest part of Belgrade with Ottoman heritage, Kalemegdan park, Belgrade fortress, and „Victor“ the most famous symbol of Belgrade among many others.

This tour starts every day at 11am and 4pm during the whole year.

Once Upon A Time in Yugoslavia

The second tour I usually like to do in a city will be more about one specific element of the city’s history. In Berlin I picked a street art tour, but in Belgrade I decided to go with a tour about Yugoslavia’s history with Belgrade Free Tour.

This tour will obviously be all about the former country known as Yugoslavia, which consisted of seven (or eight if you count Kosovo; which the UN tells you not to do) current countries. The guide will take you to famous sights of this era, including the House of Flowers (Tito’s final resting place) and bombed out buildings. It will also show you more about the lifestyle of people in Yugoslavia.

The tour takes place every Wednesday and Saturday at 2:30pm, and reservations are required. The meeting point is at Republic Square like most other tours. Total cost of the tour in 2019 was 12 euro.

Food and Culture Tour in Belgrade

Two tours are usually enough to satiate my needs for a while in terms of learning more about a city. So, as my third tour I opted for a food tour called Serbia on Your Plate Tour. I absolutely adore food tours, the one in Istanbul is still my all-time favourite.

This specific food tour takes you past six authentic places where you try 14 types of food. Normally the tour is in the early afternoon, but in order to accomodate two late-comers they moved the tour to the evening which was fine by me. It was actually fun to enjoy it with two more people rather than by myself.

Conclusion

I think tours are fun. I do tire my friends out when I opt for taking tours over just roaming around the city, so when I’m not travelling alone I try to balance things out a bit. In the case of Belgrade I went all out, because I was travelling by myself. I didn’t leave wanting more, so I think I actually did really well. I hope this post was useful to you. You could always opt to do these “tours” by yourself, but I liked what I learned about the city so I highly recommend all of them.
